Slowly Losing Your Hearing?
A common complaint of those who are suffering hearing loss is that they can hear but cannot understand. This is typically the result of a loss of hearing sensitivity in the high frequency (pitch) range. Because consonant sounds are affected, the clarity of speech starts to decrease. This symptom may also cause other people to sound like they are mumbling when they are not.
Gradual hearing loss can be very frustrating to the hearing impaired person who may not realize what is happening and therefore doesn’t seek professional help. A typical sign for hearing loss is social withdrawal. Someone who once enjoyed speaking with others or attending social functions becomes shy or withdrawn. Another common sign is misinformation. The hearing impaired person only hears part of a word or sentence and tries to fill in the blanks for the rest. Family members and friends think that this person is having memory problems or getting confused.
