]]> http://salineaudiology.com/2048-saline-audiology-5/feed/ 0 Ear Wax http://salineaudiology.com/1918-ear-wax/ http://salineaudiology.com/1918-ear-wax/#comments Mon, 24 Jan 2011 14:00:57 +0000 Lisa Richey, Au.D. http://salineaudiology.com/?p=1918 If you’re having hearing problems, you may not need hearing aids.  Check to see if you have ear wax buildup.  Usually the ear cleans itself.  But if the wax remains there, the eardrum can become totally blocked.  This will reduce hearing and perhaps cause permanent damage.  Too much wax can also cause vertigo.

Don’t use a cotton swab to remove the wax.  Since the swab is larger than the canal, it can push wax further inside and cause additional buildup and damage.  The wax must be softened before removal.  Dried wax attaches to the skin like a scab and can cause intense bleeding, eardrum perforation and infections if removed before softening.
